Robert Marjolin (1911-1986) was Jean Monnet’s assistant in the Plan from 1945 to 1948, Secretary General of the Organisation for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) from 1948 to 1955 and Vice-President of the European Commission from 1958 to 1967.
The archives were handed over to the Foundation by Mrs Elise Guidoni-Marjolin and Mr Robert Jacques Marjolin, daughter and son of Robert Marjolin.
Period covered by the documentation: 1934-1985.
A substantial part of Robert Marjolin’s archives consists of his writings, speeches, statements and lectures throughout his activities as OEEC Secretary General, economist, professor, business advisor, expert and academician.
The collection of his articles began in the inter-war period with a series of contributions to the journal L’Europe Nouvelle (1934-1939).
These archives bear witness to the different stages of Robert Marjolin’s career.
Important dossiers reflect the genesis of the OEEC, the activities of the European Economic Cooperation Committee and the work of the OEEC until 1955. Others deal with the origins of the Common Market, the work of the Vernet Commission, the debate in France when the Common Market was established and its functioning until the 1965 crisis.
The early documentation also includes files on the Brussels conference and Euratom, supplemented by reactions from private circles to both Euratom and the Common Market. The question of economic and monetary union is another subject of interest, illustrated from 1958 to 1985.
The archives are supplemented by a general correspondence which essentially covers the period 1967-1974. Finally, the preparation, writing and publication of Robert Marjolin’s Memoirs is a final important part of the archives.
