Democracy in the age of society 4.0 (2022-2025)

Since the end of 2022, the research on society 4.0 looks into the new paradigms to which democracy has to adapt itself. This period extends to 2025 and questions the relationship between technology and the rule of law.

In the context of the extended use of certain technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Metavers, social media, etc.), not always with the knowledge of the State, what room is there for democratic governments? How can the rapport between tech giants and governments be handled, when data protection and news coverage are becoming key factors in maintaining a democratic state? Our democracies need to adapt to these changing paradigms, as technology has an increasingly important role. As such, State sovereignty is being questionned, what are its limits in this new digital world ? Should regulations and legislation be more flexible or stricter? In a context where terms such as “cybersecurity”, “disinformation” or “civic tech” come up regularly, it is of paramount importance to deal with them as a whole, in order to demystify them and grasp the real issues at stake.
