International colloquium - 28th and 29th March 2019

Europe in the World (2019)

The Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe’s international colloquium on the theme of “Europe in the World” took place on 28th and 29th March 2019. The scientific event attracted about 150 people who came to the University of Lausanne campus to attend the presentations by about 20 experts.

This event was organized by the Foundation in partnership with the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute in Florence, with the support of foraus, of the World Economic Forum, of the FNS, the Société Académique Vaudoise, the daily paper 24heures, the Victoria Hotel and the University of Lausanne.

The first part of the colloquium opened with remarks from Pat Cox, President of the Foundation and former President of the European Parliament. The public was then able to attend two keynote lectures by José Maria Gil-Robles, former President of the Foundation and former President of the European Parliament, and by Gustav Lindstrom, Director of the European Union Institute for Security Studies, before interacting with them during question and answer sessions.

The second part of the colloquium was devoted on the one hand to the theme of values around an intervention and a round table with members of the forum. On the other hand, four panels of experts took place on this second day: the historical panel, the panel on challenges, and two panels of shared views on the neighbourhood and geopolitics. These panels were all facilitated by members of foraus.

In his concluding remarks, Pat Cox summarised the content of the symposium by highlighting the influence of a profoundly changing world, and the trade and security tensions that represent real challenges for Europe and its cohesion.
