After the opening of the event by Pat Cox, President of the Foundation, and his announcement that Herman Van Rompuy could not travel to Lausanne due to weather conditions that prevented aircraft from landing, the former President of the European Council took the floor by videoconference.

With all his European experience, Mr Van Rompuy stressed the need for leadership that the European Union is meeting and that will be fundamental for the future. Anticipating the challenges will, he said, be decisive for the EU’s future so that we no longer have to deal with each crisis in a hurry.

Mr. Van Rompuy’s speech ended with questions from Pat Cox to Herman Van Rompuy.
